Revitalizing a Historic Community Asset
The Thrasher Group partnered with the Randolph County Development Authority to create a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the historic Elkins Railyard property in downtown Elkins, West Virginia. Together, we transformed this historically significant site into The Railyard Event & Conference Center – a vibrant, mixed-use destination supporting economic growth, community engagement, tourism, and recreation.
A 16,000-Square-Foot Events and Convention Center
At the center of the redevelopment is a 16,000-square-foot events and convention center designed to serve a wide range of community and regional needs, including:
- Business meetings and conferences
- Conventions and trade shows
- Cultural events and performances
- Community celebrations and gatherings
The facility’s adaptable floor plan allows it to function as one large venue or divide into multiple sections, supporting smaller groups and simultaneous events at the same time.
The Railyard Event & Conference Center will also serve as an extension of the Elkins Depot Welcome Center, where visitors can experience exhibits celebrating the history, heritage, and railroad legacy of Elkins and the surrounding region.
Services Provided: Master planning, site development planning, economic development support, community revitalization planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, transportation and connectivity planning, and public engagement support.
A Mixed-Use Commercial District Creating Opportunities for Growth and Connection
Beyond the Event & Convention Center, The Railyard redevelopment plan establishes a mixed-use commercial district designed to encourage private investment and support local businesses in downtown Elkins.
Retail, Office, and Employment Space
A new commercial building will include:
- Street-level retail space for shops, restaurants, and small businesses
- Class A office space on upper floors, attracting professional services and new employment opportunities to downtown Elkins
Expanded Public Gathering Spaces
The plan builds on the site’s existing plaza and amphitheater with the addition of an outdoor patio, creating space for:
- Farmers markets
- Food truck festivals
- Outdoor performances
- Community events
Riverfront and Trail Connectivity
New connections to the nearby riverfront and regional trail systems will expand recreational access and improve connectivity throughout the district. Ample on-site parking supports both event attendees and recreational users, helping the district stay active year-round and reinforcing downtown Elkins’ connection to its natural surroundings and historic identity.
