Multi-functional
The Rex W. Tillerson Leadership Center is a cornerstone facility located within the expansive Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia. As part of this world-renowned outdoor adventure and leadership training destination, the Center plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of leaders through immersive, hands-on learning experiences.
Designed with both function and inspiration in mind, the Leadership Center includes six state-of-the-art educational classrooms. Each space is thoughtfully equipped to foster collaboration, critical thinking, and interactive learning. These classrooms support a wide range of programming, from small group workshops to structured leadership development sessions.
At the heart of the Rex W. Tillerson Leadership Center is the Leadership Hall—a spacious, flexible venue that serves as the central gathering space. This hall was intentionally designed to accommodate a variety of functions. It can easily transform to host lectures, banquets, training seminars, award ceremonies, and group educational activities. Whether used for formal presentations or informal discussions, the space encourages engagement and connection among participants.
In addition to its functional versatility, the architecture and layout of the Leadership Center reflect the core values of Scouting America—adaptability, community, and growth. Natural materials, open spaces, and thoughtful design elements create an environment that is both welcoming and inspiring. The facility seamlessly blends into the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the connection between leadership, learning, and the outdoors.
Moreover, the Center is not just a building—it’s a platform for personal development. It supports a wide range of leadership programs that challenge participants to think critically, work collaboratively, and lead with integrity. Whether hosting a small leadership retreat or a large-scale event, the Rex W. Tillerson Leadership Center provides the infrastructure and atmosphere needed to cultivate meaningful growth.
Ultimately, this facility stands as a testament to the power of intentional design in supporting lifelong learning and leadership. It continues to serve as a hub for innovation, reflection, and community-building within the broader mission of the Summit Bechtel Reserve.
Sustainable
The Thrasher Group provided architectural design for this project with a particular effort made to use sustainable and healthy materials at every opportunity. Furnishings and materials were chosen to create a healthy, active, and engaging learning environment in the classroom areas and an elegant, upscale space in the lecture hall. The building form features large expanses of glass in the classrooms to provide views of the woods, creating a connection between the interior and exterior environments. Additionally, a rain garden was created to help manage stormwater runoff on the project site.
Let’s discuss your project.
