Located within the Summit Bechtel Reserve, the Harvey Family Mountain Bike Shop is part of a 14,000-acre high-adventure facility managed by Scouting America. Since opening in 2013, the Summit has consistently welcomed the Boy Scouts of America and other groups for a wide range of outdoor activities. These include whitewater rafting, climbing, zip-lining, hiking, archery, shooting, skateboarding, BMX, and mountain biking. Moreover, the site has hosted both the National Boy Scout Jamboree and the World Scout Jamboree in 2019, drawing visitors from around the globe.
At the center of biking activity is the Harvey Family Mountain Bike Shop. It anchors Action Point, which features BMX tracks and access to miles of mountain bike trails through Fayette County. From this hub, riders can easily launch into the surrounding wooded hills.
The shop itself sits under a large steel canopy at the edge of a hillside. As a result, elevated ramps allow bikers to enter and exit the trail system with ease. Beneath the canopy are two support buildings and a bike wash, all clad to resemble oversized toolboxes—a playful nod to the biking theme.
Specifically, one building includes a retail area and a gear check-in/check-out room, while the other houses a repair shop, storage, and an office. In addition, both buildings include restrooms. Inside, the finishes are simple yet durable, with polished concrete floors and stained plywood walls and ceilings.
Importantly, the canopy structure is designed to mimic a bicycle frame. Its white roof reflects sunlight, while insulation helps reduce heat and dampen noise during storms. Additionally, two large fans provide airflow to keep the space cool in the summer.
Finally, the Harvey Family Mountain Bike Shop at Action Point in Glen Jean, West Virginia, recently received an Honor Award from the West Virginia AIA. This recognition highlights its innovative design and its vital role in supporting outdoor recreation.
