Solid Engineering Solutions
The Thrasher Group teamed with Kelly Paving, an affiliate of Shelly & Sands, for the design-build project completing the Halleck Road overpass, which replaced both northbound and southbound structures carrying I-79 over Halleck Road in Monongalia County, West Virginia.
The existing structures were 135’-6” three-span concrete I-beam structures that were founded intermediately by reinforced multi-column concrete piers and reinforced concrete abutments. Thrasher shortened the overall length of the structure to 69’-0” bearing-to-bearing by utilizing MSE walls with stub abutments. In addition, Thrasher provided an Alternative Technical Concept for the design of the temporary shoring system to support the deteriorated exterior beams. This allowed Kelly Paving to construct the structure in two phases instead of three.
The project also consisted of widening I-79 to three lanes and constructing a bifurcated median. The total roadway-improvement length was approximately 1,300’.
In-House Construction Materials Testing
In addition to the design, Thrasher was also responsible for materials testing on the project. Members of our Quality Assurance team provided compaction testing in addition to running daily sieve analyses on stone being placed by the contractor, and we tested concrete for the bridge and walls, while also completing compressive strength testing on concrete beams for the bridge.
Let’s discuss your project.
